His original job there was Area Manager for Driver Operations, during which he was responsible for managing approximately 600 drivers out of five states. In 1997, he became the Director of Safety. Today, he is the head safety and security person for the company. “I establish policies and procedures that promote and maintain operational safety, company’s security-related matters, regulatory compliance and a good working environment. I’m also the primary contact with the Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration. “I learned my trade in the Army and I was fortunate enough to parlay what I learned into a successful civilian career,” he says. Married
and the father of “two children (one in college; the other in high school)
and a dog,” Mr. Guariento lives in Dallas, Texas. Eunice Roughton “I’ve been a Motorcoach Operator for Greyhound since 1980,” states Eunice Roughton of Louisville, Kentucky. “And I’m also a Driver Instructor. “I
became an Army Reservist in 1978.” As a single mother of a son and a daughter, she needed an income that would support her family, so she discovered a Creative Employment Project that sent her on various interviews, resulting in being hired by Greyhound. “I had a whole month away from home in Tennessee to do my training while my family watched my children.” Today, she’s a grandma and drives the route to Nashville six days of the week. As a Driver Instructor, she shares her know-how with newcomers joining the company. And, as a member of the Army Reserves, she’s now a Master Sergeant, who helps to train troops for Iraq.
Leslie Foster, an 18-plus-year Army veteran and currently a member of the National Guard in the Richmond, Virginia area, became a full-time Motorcoach Operator for Greyhound in 1995. “Those with Seniority have their choice of regular routes. I work what is called the Extraboard. I am on call 24–7. I wait for an assignment and when I’m called in to report and am given an assignment, it’s something different every day. They try to keep drivers within their home area, but occasionally I may get an assignment that takes three or four days. “I personally find it more interesting that I don’t have to do the same things every day. I would tell other veterans that I find this job to be exciting. I really like what I do,” he tells us.
